Exciting News: University Senate Greenlights Executive Master of Health Administration Program—Now Seeking Board of Trustees’ Endorsement!

Ohio State is set to launch an Executive Master of Health Administration program in Autumn 2026. This new program aims to give healthcare professionals more opportunities for advanced leadership training.

The Executive Master’s program is designed for those with four to five years of experience in healthcare administration or clinical roles. This option fills a gap in the existing Master of Health Administration, which is already ranked among the top 20 programs in the country by US News and World Report. Until now, Ohio State has been one of the few top programs without a dedicated track for mid-career professionals. Sue Sutherland, chair of the Council on Academic Affairs, emphasized the need for this specialized path.

The curriculum will adapt current courses and introduce new executive skills training through the Health Services Management and Policy Department. Students will work in cohorts, taking classes once a year with no elective options. The entire program consists of 45 credit hours and can be completed online, although there will be chances for networking and professional development in person.

Tuition is estimated to be around $63,000, which breaks down to about $1,400 per credit hour. Initial enrollment is expected to be around 20 to 25 students. This program not only targets healthcare employees aiming for managerial roles but also appeals to medical professionals seeking leadership positions and alumni from Ohio State’s existing program who want to advance their education.

Interestingly, there’s a growing trend in executive programs that cater to experienced professionals. According to a recent study from the Graduate Management Admission Council, individuals in these programs often seek practical networking opportunities and relevant coursework that addresses their current challenges as leaders. The Executive Master’s degree offers just that. As Sutherland mentioned, professionals in this field appreciate learning from peers who share similar backgrounds and experiences.

The program will be led by Dr. Debra Zevallos, an associate dean in the College of Public Health. Plans are already underway to finalize the curriculum and recruit faculty for the courses. If approved by the Board of Trustees and the Ohio Department of Higher Education, Ohio State will welcome its first cohort in 2026, marking a significant step forward in healthcare education.
