David Vumbaco, Ph.D., has taken the role of director of research at the North Texas Eye Research Institute (NTERI), effective November 3. This institute, part of UNT Health Fort Worth, is known for its strong focus on visual sciences.
Vumbaco, who previously worked at the Allen Institute for Brain Science in Seattle, is eager to build partnerships and expand research opportunities at NTERI. He emphasized the importance of innovation in attracting the next generation of scientists, saying, “They want environments where ideas can grow and be tested.” His goal is to make NTERI a hub for bold thinking and impactful research.
With a doctorate from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, Vumbaco’s background equips him to lead in advancing scientific projects. He is excited to collaborate with the talented teams at NTERI, aiming for transformative findings that benefit the community.
Dr. Dimitrios Karamichos, vice president of research and graduate studies at UNT Health, expressed enthusiasm about Vumbaco joining their team. He noted that Vumbaco will contribute significantly during a critical growth phase for the institute.
NTERI has a rich history of over 30 years in advancing visual sciences through significant research. Its scientists are recognized globally for their work in this field, focusing on effective interventions for eye diseases. In recent years, the need for such research has grown, with statistics showing that approximately 2.7 million Americans aged 40 and older are affected by glaucoma, an eye disease that can lead to blindness if left untreated. This underscores the necessity of ongoing research and innovation in eye health.
As Vumbaco steps into his new role, the institute is poised to not only continue its legacy but also expand its impact on healthcare systems and patient care. His leadership could be pivotal in furthering these advancements and shaping the future of eye research.
