Mayor Julius Bloomfield appreciated Helena’s decade of service. “Helena has been a dedicated voice for our community. We’re proud to see her take on this important role at the federal level. We look forward to collaborating with her as she continues her advocacy for our region,” he stated.

With her departure, the City of Penticton must hold a by-election to fill her vacant council seat. A Chief Election Officer will be appointed soon, and the General Voting Day will be scheduled for a Saturday within 80 days of this appointment. This election is expected to happen in late summer, with costs covered by the City’s General Surplus.

Angie Collison, the corporate officer, remarked, “We are gearing up for the by-election. That includes scheduling the General Voting Day and advance polls. Our team is dedicated to ensuring the process is smooth and efficient for Penticton residents.”

Even with Councillor James Miller on a mandatory Leave of Absence, the council can still carry out its duties effectively. Penticton welcomed its newest Councillor, Jason Reynen, who was sworn in on April 16, 2025.

This by-election process is in line with the Local Government Act, highlighting how local governance evolves as elected officials move between levels of government. Such transitions can influence community dynamics significantly. In fact, according to recent surveys, community engagement often increases after a council member is elected to a higher position, as residents become more invested in their representatives’ new roles.
