The University of West Florida (UWF) recently celebrated a significant achievement by nominating its first-ever Rhodes Scholar finalist. The Rhodes Scholarship is known worldwide as one of the most prestigious fellowships, offering students the chance to study at the University of Oxford. This milestone comes alongside the launch of the John W. Merting Family Office of National Fellowships, established with a generous gift of $500,000 from the Merting family. This office aims to help students seek elite fellowship opportunities like the Rhodes Scholarship.
Ambrea Hobbs, a senior majoring in history and legal studies, was selected as UWF’s nominee. She aimed for a fully funded postgraduate study at Oxford, which not only covers tuition but also provides a living stipend, travel costs, and health fees. Along with Itamar Blau, a premed senior in mathematics, Hobbs made history as one of the first two UWF students nominated.
Claire Holderman, the coordinator of the new fellowship office, expressed her early enthusiasm about Hobbs. “Discovery often happens through connections. Ambrea had a spark that stood out,” she said. Although initially unsure about the Rhodes Scholarship, Hobbs quickly embraced the chance to apply.
After being nominated, Hobbs advanced to the interview stage, which took place in Birmingham, Alabama. There, she competed against top candidates from renowned institutions like the University of Pennsylvania and the University of North Carolina. While she did not win the scholarship, Hobbs felt honored to represent UWF on such a significant platform. “The process taught me a lot about myself and what I want for my future,” she shared.
Dr. Tyler Fisher, a former Rhodes Scholar, also praised Hobbs. He expressed admiration for her determination and noted that she upheld UWF’s standards during the interviews.
The John W. Merting Family Office of National Fellowships is not just about the Rhodes Scholarship. It provides UWF students with access to various fellowships, including Fulbright and Truman. The office offers guidance, feedback on essays, interview prep, and mentorship. Monthly workshops help students prepare and raise awareness about available opportunities like study abroad programs and research initiatives.
As more students seek global opportunities, UWF’s efforts through this office aim to support and empower them to reach new heights.
