Exciting news for train travelers! The Vande Bharat Sleeper service between Bengaluru and Mumbai is set to launch soon, according to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. He shared this update while unveiling a new express train linking the two cities.
Vaishnaw emphasized that the central government is working hard to meet railway needs in both South and North Karnataka by boosting infrastructure and funding. “We’re addressing long-standing railway requests,” he said, highlighting ongoing projects and investments.
Recently, railway funding in Karnataka has seen a significant increase. This growth is speeding up important rail projects throughout the state. For instance, the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme aims to revamp 61 railway stations in Karnataka at a cost of ₹2,160 crore, with nine already completed. Notable redevelopments include the Bengaluru Cantonment station, which has a budget of ₹485 crore, and the Yeshwantpur station, set for ₹367 crore redevelopment.
Since 2014, Karnataka has also seen about 1,750 km of new railway lines built. The electrification of the challenging Hassan–Mangaluru route is now finished, with testing underway. On top of that, the Bengaluru Suburban Railway Project is advancing, with construction ongoing across four corridors. Land acquisition is complete for the Baiyappanahalli–Chikkabanavara and Heelalige–Rajanukunte routes, where station work is in progress.
Moreover, plans for the KSR Bengaluru–Devanahalli corridor have received combined approval from both the Karnataka government and the Railways. Geotechnical surveys are complete, and the Kengeri–Whitefield corridor also got the green light, with surveys expected to start shortly.
This surge in railway development highlights a growing trend in India, where improved transportation infrastructure is crucial for economic growth. According to a recent survey by the Ministry of Railways, over 70% of Indians rely on railways for their travel needs, reflecting the importance of these projects.
As the Vande Bharat Sleeper service nears its launch, travelers can look forward to faster, more comfortable journeys between these major economic centers. The government’s commitment to enhancing railway services can lead to greater connectivity and boost local economies.
