Dr. Stepp joined the Mulvane team in 2022 as an academic curator and brings over eight years of experience in museums and exhibitions. She recently completed her doctorate in art history at the University of Kansas, earning her degree with honors in 2023. Dr. Stepp has taught art history and museum studies at the university level for more than six years.

Her achievements include the Andrew W. Mellon Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Curriculum Fellowship and the Chu-Tsing Li Award for Academic Excellence from the University of Kansas. These accolades highlight her commitment to enriching the educational landscape in the arts.

Dr. Kelly Erby, dean of Washburn University College of Arts & Sciences, expressed her enthusiasm for Dr. Stepp’s appointment. She believes that Dr. Stepp will bring fresh ideas and energy to the museum, reinforcing its importance both on campus and within the wider community.

Dr. Stepp succeeds Connie Gibbons, who retired after nearly 12 years in the role. This transition comes at a time when art institutions are increasingly focusing on community engagement and inclusivity.

Recent studies show that museums are evolving to meet modern expectations, including enhancing accessibility and diversifying their collections. According to a survey conducted by the American Alliance of Museums, nearly 70% of respondents believe that museums should play a key role in promoting social justice and equity.

As Dr. Stepp settles into her new position, it will be interesting to see how she shapes the future of the Mulvane Art Museum, particularly in the context of these broader trends in the museum field.
