Waymo is stepping up its game by introducing fully autonomous rides on freeways in Los Angeles, Phoenix, and the San Francisco Bay Area. This is a big deal for self-driving technology, which has struggled to conquer highway driving for years.

Previously, Waymo kept its robotaxis to city streets while they fine-tuned their technology. After extensive testing, the company feels confident enough to venture onto faster roads. According to co-CEO Dmitri Dolgov, “Freeway driving is easy to learn but hard to master without a human driver as backup.”

Waymo is the first company in the U.S. to offer completely driverless rides on highways. Wend Ju, a professor at Cornell University, acknowledges that highways have fewer pedestrians, which can make them seem safer, but they also pose unique risks due to higher speeds. “The car has to predict situations much farther down the road,” she notes.

In a recent test, a Waymo robotaxi navigated freeways smoothly, adhering to speed limits and maintaining safe distances. This development comes as competition heats up; Tesla has also launched rides in Austin and San Francisco, hoping to offer rider-only services soon.

While Waymo’s technology is impressive, safety remains a top concern. In 2023, another autonomous vehicle service faced criticism after an accident in San Francisco. Waymo’s record is cleaner, having reportedly traveled over 100 million miles without fatal incidents.

Experts echo the need for caution. Srikanth Saripalli from Texas A&M University believes Waymo’s technology is comparable to a human driver, but warns that they must prove their safety in diverse environments beyond California and the Sun Belt.

Statistics reveal that about 18% of traffic deaths occur on highways, emphasizing the need for rigorous standards. To address these hazards, Waymo studied issues like aggressive drivers and road conditions before launching their freeway service. They plan to gradually expand their freeway operations while monitoring vehicle responses.
