Exciting News: WHL Announces New Expansion Franchise Set to Launch in the 2025-26 Season!

The Prince George Cougars are gearing up for a new rivalry in the BC Division. Next week, the WHL is set to introduce the Penticton Vees, a popular team from the BCHL.

According to hockey insider Eliotte Friedman, some notable names will be backing this venture, including former New York Rangers goalie Mike Richter and Winnipeg Jets star Mark Scheifele. Interestingly, Richter’s son, Tom, has previously played for the Vees and the Prince George Spruce Kings.

The Vees have a strong track record, currently leading the Interior Conference with an impressive 40-7-5-0 record. Since adopting the Vees name in 2004, they have clinched the Fred Page Cup six times. Their victory in the 2012 Doyle Cup felt especially sweet as it marked their first national Junior A title in 26 years.

Penticton’s hockey history is rich. The franchise began as the Broncos in 1967, capturing league championships multiple times. They later transformed into the Knights, dominating with three consecutive titles from 1980 to 1982.

Looking ahead, Friedman hinted at plans for a WHL team in Chilliwack, potentially hitting the ice in the 2026-27 season. This move could reshape the landscape of junior hockey in British Columbia.
