Exciting News: Winter Classic Ice Trucks Roll Into Miami as Rink Construction Kicks Off!

This year, the NHL is shaking things up by using two Mobile Refrigeration Units instead of one. Starting on December 23 or 24, they’ll ramp up the air conditioning and spray layers of mist over the ice pans. This technique will help create a thick, solid ice sheet for the upcoming Winter Classic.

“I think everything will go smoothly,” said King. “We can keep the building conditioned, which will allow us to build the ice just like we would in any other venue.”

The ice at Amerant Bank Arena, the Panthers’ usual home, measures about 1¼ to 1½ inches thick. However, for this event, it’s set to be between 2 to 2½ inches thick. That extra thickness means they can remove water if needed, rather than having to add more.

King plans to open the roof for the big game on January 2, during the evening when temperatures are cooler and the sun has set. But what about the quality of the ice? “I believe it will be great,” King added. “This venue is different, but we can control many factors. We’ll make adjustments as needed and focus on what we can handle.”

King also mentioned that the practice day for players serves as a practice day for the team managing the ice. “It allows us to fine-tune everything and ensure the best possible surface for the players,” he explained.

The excitement is palpable. Panthers general manager Bill Zito described the Winter Classic as a “spectacular event” and a “bucket-list occasion.”

Interestingly, outdoor ice hockey has a rich history. The first Winter Classic took place in 2008 and has become a beloved tradition, drawing fans from all over. According to a recent survey by Nielsen, over 3 million viewers tuned in for last year’s event, showing just how popular this annual celebration has become.

Social media is also buzzing about this year’s Winter Classic. Hashtags like #WinterClassic and #NHL are trending, signaling widespread anticipation. Fans are sharing their memories from past events while expressing their excitement for this year’s game.

As the date approaches, both players and fans are gearing up for a memorable experience, embracing the excitement and tradition that the Winter Classic brings.
