Exciting News: World Cup of Hockey Returns in February 2028 – Everything You Need to Know!

MONTREAL — Exciting news for hockey fans! The World Cup of Hockey is set to return in February 2028, according to the NHL and NHL Players’ Association.

This tournament is part of an exciting international schedule, which includes events like the 4 Nations Face-Off and the upcoming Olympics in Milano Cortina in 2026 and the French Alps in 2030.

During a press conference before the 4 Nations Face-Off’s opening game in Montreal, key figures like NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA executive director Marty Walsh shared this thrilling update with the public.

Bettman emphasized the significance of international play for players, saying, “Representing their countries is in their DNA, and fans love to see it.” He added that the World Cup of Hockey will pave the way for more players to showcase their talent on a global stage.

This will be the fourth World Cup of Hockey, with previous tournaments held in 1996, 2004, and 2016. Soon, cities will be able to bid to host this prestigious event.

Walsh echoed Bettman’s sentiments, expressing excitement about providing players with the chance to compete internationally. “It’s a great honor for any player to wear their country’s jersey on the world stage,” he noted.

The 4 Nations Face-Off is the first international tournament featuring NHL players since 2016. After missing the Olympics in 2018 and 2022, the NHL will send players to Italy next February.

The 2028 World Cup will take place on NHL-sized rinks, using NHL rules and officials. More details about the tournament, including teams and dates, will be announced later this year. You can also find historical details and stats from previous World Cups on Records.NHL.com.

Swedish player Erik Karlsson shared his enthusiasm, stating, “We’ve missed this for a long time. A big tournament every other year would be ideal.”
