Apple TV is diving deeper into the “Monsterverse” with a new prequel series focused on Colonel Lee Shaw, played by Wyatt Russell. This character has some history—his father, Kurt Russell, portrays him in later years in the original series, adding a unique family connection.
The series, which is still untitled, is helmed by Joby Harold, known for his work on Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Harold’s company, Safehouse Pictures, will also oversee the entire “Monsterverse” for Apple. This universe features beloved Titans from the franchise and promises new ones as well.
Set in 1984, the prequel tells Shaw’s story as he undertakes a secret mission. He’s trying to stop the Soviets from unleashing a Titan so massive it could threaten the U.S. and alter the course of the Cold War. This historical backdrop adds tension, blending fiction with real events.
Harold expressed his excitement: “I feel privileged to help expand this iconic universe. Apple and Legendary have been fantastic partners, and we aim to present these cinematic Titans with the respect they deserve.”
Currently, the first season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters is streaming, with the second season set to debut on February 27.
The prequel brings a strong production team together, including Harold, Tory Tunnell, and Wyatt Russell. Notably, Kei Banno, Brian Rogers, and Kenji Okuhira add their experience, with Toho Co., Ltd.—the iconic studio behind Godzilla—also involved.
Harold’s entry into television with Obi-Wan Kenobi was impressive, earning five Emmy nominations and drawing significant viewership. His track record includes successful franchises like John Wick and Transformers, which shows that he understands how to engage audiences.
