Exciting Oil Discoveries: IOCL-BPCL Joint Venture Strikes Gold in Abu Dhabi’s Onshore Block 1

Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and Bharat PetroResources Limited (BPRL), a subsidiary of Bharat Petroleum, have celebrated a significant achievement in their global oil exploration efforts. They’ve made multiple oil discoveries in Abu Dhabi’s Onshore Block 1, thanks to their joint venture, Urja Bharat Pte Limited (UBPL). This marks a key step for India in the international energy landscape.

UBPL was granted the Onshore Block 1 Exploration Concession under Abu Dhabi’s 2019 Bid Round. This deal gives India a foothold in one of the world’s richest oil-producing regions. Their recent discoveries showcase the technical skills and strong operational foundation of IOCL and BPCL as major players in the energy sector.

In early 2024, UBPL struck oil with its first discovery at the XN-76 exploratory well in the unconventional Shilaif play. After successful hydrofracking, the well released light crude oil, sending a clear message about the potential of unconventional resources in the area. This remarkable finding has heightened interest in the block, prompting a move into the appraisal phase to evaluate its commercial possibilities.

Building on this successful streak, another discovery came from the exploratory well XN-79-02S. It also revealed light crude oil, this time from the Habshan reservoir, marking the first discovery in this reservoir within Onshore Block 1. This opens up new avenues for development, with appraisal efforts already in the pipeline to explore commercial opportunities.

These achievements boost UBPL’s reputation in the upstream sector and align perfectly with India’s goal of enhancing energy security through strategic overseas investments in hydrocarbons. According to recent statistics from the Indian Ministry of Petroleum, India imports around 85% of its crude oil, highlighting the importance of these discoveries in reducing dependency on foreign sources.

Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Singh Puri, expressed his excitement about the achievements on social media, underscoring the importance of these breakthroughs for India’s energy self-sufficiency. His message emphasized the dedication and expertise of the teams involved and reaffirmed a commitment to exploring further hydrocarbon potential.

As India continues to expand its energy landscape, these discoveries in Abu Dhabi underscore a pivotal shift toward a more self-reliant energy future. With ongoing global shifts in energy production, India’s efforts in hydrocarbon exploration will play a critical role in ensuring stable energy supplies for the foreseeable future.
