Exciting Opportunity: WVU Health Professions Students Can Now Apply for Scholars Program!

The WVU Institute for Community and Rural Health, along with the West Virginia Area Health Education Centers, is inviting applications for the WV AHEC Rural Community Health Scholars program.

If you’re interested, make sure to apply by May 19 to secure early admission.

In its first year, two-thirds of the participants were from WVU, and the program is excited to welcome more health students from the university.

This two-year initiative is designed for 75 students who are passionate about improving rural health in West Virginia. It aims to teach students about healthcare from various perspectives—clinical experience, classroom learning, and community engagement.

As a RCH Scholar, you will:

  • Develop leadership skills in your field and community.
  • Get additional training from rural health experts.
  • Learn how to deliver health services in underserved areas.
  • Build teamwork skills by collaborating with other health professionals.
  • Gain hands-on experience providing patient care.
  • Receive a $1,300 completion award at the end of the program.

To qualify, you should have a GPA of at least 3.0 and a minimum of two years left in your degree program, with a strong interest in rural health.

Classes for the new cohort will begin on September 1 and conclude in May 2027.

According to the National Rural Health Association, rural communities face unique healthcare challenges, including fewer available practitioners and higher rates of chronic diseases. Programs like this one aim to bridge those gaps by training health professionals who are committed to serving these areas. This is not only a rewarding career but also makes a significant impact on the lives of others.

You can learn more about the program by visiting the WVU AHEC site.
