Wärtsilä and Elomatic have teamed up in a new licensing deal to share their technology and trademarks for the Elogrid system.
Elogrid is a type of thruster grid technology that cuts down fuel usage and boosts the performance of thrusters. It also helps water flow better along the hulls of vessels. This agreement was signed in December 2024.
Rami Hirsimäki, Senior VP of Marine at Elomatic, expressed excitement about the partnership: “Wärtsilä and Elomatic have worked together for a long time. We’re thrilled to keep this collaboration going. Together, we can effectively introduce this innovative solution and aid in global decarbonization.”

With this deal, Wärtsilä can sell, produce, install, and maintain the Elogrid technology in the areas outlined in the agreement.
The licensing deal will last for 12 years, with progress checks along the way.
During this time, clients will see the solution branded as ‘ELOGRID™ by Wärtsilä’. This combines Elomatic’s Elogrid technology with Wärtsilä’s thrusters, creating a cohesive product built on both companies’ strengths.

Elomatic designed all of Wärtsilä’s Elogrids to ensure top performance for vessel operators.
Lauri Tiainen, Director of Thruster and Propulsion Control Systems at Wärtsilä Marine, noted: “Ship owners and operators face rising costs and tougher environmental rules. The Elogrid solution helps save fuel and boost efficiency, which in turn lowers emissions. This supports our customers in tackling these challenges.”
Recently, Wärtsilä announced it will provide its EnergyFlow technology and Fixed Pitch Propellers (FPP) for three Pure Car/Truck Carrier (PCTC) ships run by Sallaum Lines, a worldwide RoRo freight operator.
