Cyan Worlds is back at it, bringing remakes of beloved adventure games, Myst and Riven, to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and the Microsoft Store. While Myst has seen previous releases on the Xbox, this new version is specially updated for modern systems, including enhancements for PlayStation VR2.
On the PS5, you can dive into Myst and Riven in two ways: on a flat screen or in VR. The flat-screen mode boasts new ray-traced reflections and a Performance Mode that can ramp the frame rate up from 30fps to 60fps, although this does come at the cost of some graphical features. The games also have a Power Saver Mode to help cut down on energy use. If you own the PS5 Pro, you’re in for even better visuals, including improved textures and shading.
For Xbox users, the Riven edition carries over some great upgrades from the Myst remake. It supports Xbox Play Anywhere, has ray-traced reflections, and offers 4K and HDR options for those with compatible displays.
The journey to modernize these classics kicked off in 2020 when Myst was remade for Meta’s Quest headsets. This version gave players a true 3D experience of Myst’s intriguing world. After a non-VR version hit PC and Mac in 2021, it finally came to iOS in 2023. Work on the Riven remake started recently, with a simultaneous release slated for PC, Mac, and Quest in 2024.
