The Pat Duke Memorial Arena in Lumby is getting a significant upgrade. In 2025, its old metal roof and part of the building’s exterior will be replaced. Construction will kick off around April 1, and no, it’s not an April Fool’s joke!
This arena has been a local hub since 1967, serving the communities of Lumby, Cherryville, and Electoral Area D Rural Lumby with ice for hockey, figure skating, and public skating. A big expansion happened in 2020, adding more change rooms and a viewing area to make it even better.
Rick Fairbairn, chair of the White Valley Parks, Recreation and Culture Advisory Committee, expressed excitement for the upgrades. He said, “These improvements will ensure that the arena remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone.”
The current roof is more than 50 years old. Despite many repairs, ongoing leaks have made maintaining it a challenge. That’s why the Regional District of North Okanagan (RDNO) has enlisted United Roofing BC Inc. for the job.
Lumby Mayor Kevin Acton emphasized the arena’s importance, stating, “This venue has brought our community together for over five decades. These improvements are essential for its future.” The total project cost is $1.74 million, with funding coming from various sources, including $750,000 from BC’s Growing Communities Fund.
Construction is set to take several months, aiming for completion by August 1. While the upgrades are underway, some community events may be affected, and residents are encouraged to remain patient.
To enhance the arena’s appeal, the RDNO is teaming up with the Lumby Men’s Shed to create a new wooden sign for the building, which will go up after the work is done.

According to a recent report from the Canadian Parks and Recreation Association, more municipalities are recognizing the value of maintaining and enhancing public spaces.
