Raymond Hearn is set to lead a redesign of the Katke-Cousins golf course at Oakland University in Michigan. This course, crafted by Bill Newcomb and Robert Beard, opened its doors in 1977.
Hearn’s main focus will be on the bunkers. He aims to make each hole more strategic, playable, and visually appealing, while also tackling maintenance issues. “We believe in thoughtful restoration,” Hearn stated, emphasizing his approach to enhancing the course. His selection for this project is rooted in his strong reputation in Michigan’s golf scene. “It’s a privilege to have him improve our classic course,” said Nick Pumford, the general manager. He noted that issues with drainage in the existing bunkers sparked the discussion about renovation. Instead of simply fixing the old drainage, they decided to enhance the bunkers while improving the course as a whole. “Upgrading the bunkers can significantly elevate a golf course,” Pumford added.
Connor McBride, the course superintendent, chimed in, praising Hearn’s extensive experience. “Many of us have played on courses that Hearn has worked on, and we totally understand why he’s so respected across the Midwest.” His background in turf management adds an extra layer of value—important for maintaining the 36 holes of this expansive property.
The renovation is planned to kick off in October 2027, after Hearn finalizes his master plan and receives approval from the university.
