The “Piccolofondo,” a delightful bike race for kids, is back this year in Penticton! This fun event is for children aged two to ten and will take place on July 12, from 8 to 9:30 a.m. along Lakeshore Drive.
During the race, kids will be grouped by age. There will be a race announcer, a finish line celebration, and course marshals to ensure safety. Last year, approximately 300 young cyclists joined in the excitement.
“This Saturday event is often a highlight of the weekend,” says Jodi Cross, executive director of Okanagan Granfondo Penticton. “Our goal is to engage the community and give children a chance to experience the joy of cycling.”
Every child who registers will receive a bike plate, and they can look forward to a fun and secure ride. At the finish line, participants will enjoy a juice box, cookie, and a medal to celebrate their achievement.
Parents can cheer their kids on from the sidelines as the event unfolds in Rotary Park, located at 185 Lakeshore Dr. This cherished event has been running since 2011 and kicks off a weekend filled with cycling festivities, including the larger Okanagan Granfondo.
Registration for the Piccolofondo is now open at okanagangranfondo.com/piccolofondo. Don’t miss this chance for your kids to join a cycling tradition!
Recent statistics show that community cycling events like the Piccolofondo promote healthy lifestyles for children. According to a 2022 survey by Bike for Everyone, 60% of parents reported that their children are more active when they participate in such events, highlighting the importance of engaging young ones in outdoor activities.
Joining events like this also allows children to learn important cycling safety skills, which are vital as they grow older. It’s an excellent way for families to bond over shared experiences, making positive memories together. So gear up and get ready for a day full of fun!
