Exciting Revamp: Revelstoke Golf Club and Greenbelt Society to Introduce Skiing on the Links!

Dean Jackson, the general manager of Revelstoke Golf Club, is eager to revive a winter tradition. He plans to turn two-thirds of the scenic, par-72 golf course into a cross-country ski trail, collaborating with the Illecillewaet Greenbelt Society (IGS). This four-kilometre loop along the river will welcome skiers again, offering a beautiful winter escape.

In past winters, a local volunteer would create a ski path across the snow-covered course. However, this effort gradually faded when the volunteer moved away and left behind the equipment. Although the last couple of winters didn’t have enough snow to warrant grooming, Jackson is committed to reestablishing the ski trail this December.

“We just want everyone to enjoy this stunning property during winter,” he said. The team is meeting in the spring to finalize a trail map for the groomer operator. A well-maintained four-kilometre loop should attract local skiers, recalling a time when even just a few skiers would enjoy the circuit multiple times.

Community interest is growing. Many locals in Columbia Park are nostalgic, reminiscing about the ski trail’s past. “People really miss it,” said IGS president Roger Galbraith. The society is now exploring funds from their Resident Directed (ReDi) Grant to cover fuel and maintenance for grooming equipment.

Galbraith mentioned they might use a compact grooming sled attached to a pickup truck instead of a larger vehicle, which would enhance versatility. The upkeep of the trail will depend on snow conditions and user traffic. There are also discussions about whether to allow skating, which requires more frequent grooming. It’s essential to avoid damaging the golf greens and tees during maintenance.

Local resident Mike Gravelle, who serves on the IGS board, is enthusiastic about the project. He’s willing to help store the groomer truck and rally volunteers. “People are excited for easy access to Nordic skiing and fat biking trails,” he added.

The IGS is also gaining momentum with other winter tracks around the city, like the Meadows in the Sky Parkway on Mount Revelstoke. This successful partnership with Parks Canada gives Galbraith hope for a thriving winter ski trail at Revelstoke Golf Club, making it accessible for beginners.

Reflecting on past experiences, Galbraith remembered teaching his family to ski at the course, emphasizing its beginner-friendly nature. Updates on the ski trail’s reopening will be shared on the Revelstoke Golf Club’s social media.

Renewed community interest in outdoor activities during winter is evident. According to a recent survey by Outdoor Foundation, 30% of Americans participate in winter sports, including skiing and snowboarding. Interest groups are likely to grow as more communities seek enjoyable winter activities.
