Last Friday was an exciting day at Bethpage High School! They held the second annual Science Research Alumni Panel, welcoming back twenty-five alumni who have made their mark in the STEM field. Chris Pollatos, the Director of Science, and science research teacher Nicole Delaney hosted the event.
It was a fantastic experience for both the current students and faculty. Pollatos remarked, “It was wonderful to see our current high school students and former students engaging with each other during the Q&A.”
Alumni from the school’s science research program shared their insights on pursuing research and careers in science. This program, started in 2011, is designed to ignite a passion for science and technology among students.
Over the years, the program has expanded significantly, with many students progressing to leading universities and entering various science-related professions. This year’s panel included alumni who spoke about their academic journeys and professional experiences.
They discussed their specific fields of study, current roles, and offered valuable advice on navigating similar career paths. The session wrapped up with a Q&A, where students picked the brains of alumni about their experiences, challenges, and successes in research careers. This open conversation helped high school students understand what college-level research involves and the career opportunities it offers.
Pollatos highlighted the impressive achievements of the alumni, noting that many have attended prestigious schools like Stony Brook University, Duke University, and MIT. Alumni have pursued careers as civil engineers, environmental geologists, and health and science directors. One key piece of advice shared was the importance of networking for building relationships within these fields.
