Good morning, Hopkinton! Here’s your quick update from yesterday.
Exciting news for middle schoolers! Next month, Hopkinton Public Library will host a biology workshop for kids in Grades 3-6. On Saturday, February 1, older students from the Young Scientists Association (YSA) will guide the younger kids through hands-on science activities.
“This workshop will help kids explore what they might enjoy in science,” said YSA president Akshaya Kolluri. The two-hour session will cover topics like evolution, genetics, plant biology, and the water cycle, including fun lab experiments in each section.
Akshaya, YSA vice president Devanshi Agrawal, and two other volunteers will lead the workshop. Akshaya believes it’s crucial to offer these enriching experiences to younger students. “I didn’t have many chances to show my science skills when I was younger. I want to give that opportunity to them,” she shared.
This is the YSA’s second big workshop in Hopkinton. Last year’s chemistry event drew about 20 kids, and they plan to organize more educational activities soon.
The biology workshop kicks off at 2 p.m. on February 1. Sign-up is necessary a week in advance. For more details, check out the library’s calendar. Parents should note that the workshop will involve possible allergens, so reach out to children’s librarian Carly Moniz at cmoniz@hopkintonma.gov with any concerns.
In other news, the Select Board met Tuesday night to discuss funding options for a new adaptive playground at the Marathon School and reviewed the upcoming budget for fiscal year 2026.
This week’s Police Log includes one arrest and reports of a truck colliding with a pole on Main Street. There were also sightings of an injured goose on Lake Maspenock and reports about “pushy” solar salespeople.
Don’t miss the performances of “Willy Wonka Junior” this Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at the Hopkinton Center for the Arts. It’s a youthful production by Enter Stage Left Theater.
Tonight’s town meetings include the School Committee at 7 p.m. and the Community Preservation Committee at the same time.
Lastly, here’s a wintery view of the snow accumulating on the boat ramp at Hopkinton Reservoir. Stay warm!
