Union, N.J. (4/14/26) – The Kean University women’s flag football team is gearing up for a showdown against the University of Montana this weekend as part of the Garden State/Garden City Clash.
Kean University launched its women’s flag football program last season, bringing its total varsity sports to 24. This move reflects a growing trend across colleges in the NCAA, NAIA, and NJCAA to embrace women’s flag football. The NCAA recognized it as an Emerging Sport for Women just last year.
The University of Montana made waves this spring by adding women’s flag football to its offerings, marking it as the first collegiate program in both Montana and the larger Northwest region.
Kelly Williams, Vice President of Athletics and Recreation at Kean, expressed her enthusiasm for the upcoming match. She noted, “Hosting the University of Montana showcases our commitment to women’s flag football. Events like this inspire young women to envision their own futures in sports, creating pathways and building confidence.”
The NFL is also getting involved, promoting women’s flag football at the college and high school levels. This support has been crucial as the sport gains traction across the nation. According to the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS), participation in girls’ flag football reached approximately 69,000 players during the 2024-25 school year. That’s a significant increase and shows just how popular the sport is becoming.
This Saturday’s game kicks off at 1 p.m. at Kean Alumni Stadium. In addition to Kean and Montana, the event will feature matches involving Post University and St. Joseph’s University, making it a day packed with thrilling action.
Women’s flag football is not just a game; it’s a movement. It’s about empowerment, community, and the chance for young athletes to shine. With events growing nationwide, the future looks bright for women in sports.
