Cerny, who was instrumental in designing the PS4 and PS5, explained that many of the new technologies are still in early development. However, they promise significant improvements in ray tracing, upscaling, and other rendering techniques using machine learning.

Historically, AMD’s graphics cards have struggled to match NVIDIA’s ray tracing capabilities. Instead of solely focusing on raw power to compete, AMD is taking a different route. Huynh pointed out that brute force isn’t enough for modern games, which often rely on complex upscaling techniques. To address this, AMD is introducing two major innovations: Neural Arrays and Radiance Cores.

Neural Arrays enable individual compute units to work together, sharing data effectively. This collaborative approach can enhance processing speed and efficiency. Huynh mentioned that while they aren’t connecting all GPU units physically to avoid clutter, they allow larger sections of a screen to be processed simultaneously. This innovation could lead to faster and better graphics performance on both the upcoming PlayStation and future AMD cards.

Radiance Cores are designed specifically for ray tracing, similar to NVIDIA’s dedicated cores. Huynh described these as a groundbreaking addition that allows AMD GPUs to handle light calculations more efficiently. By offloading this work, other parts of the GPU can focus on textures and shaders, improving overall performance.

The companies are also developing software called Universal Compression. This builds upon existing techniques used in the PS5 to compress graphics data, potentially lowering memory bandwidth needs and power consumption.

Cerny mentioned it’s still early days for these technologies, but their potential is promising. Enhanced ray tracing can transform the visuals in games, providing a more immersive experience. If Sony and AMD can streamline these advancements, it will benefit both developers and gamers alike.
