Exciting Sports Update: Boys Hockey Celebrates First Season Victory!

Here’s the latest on our Whaler sports teams, featuring updates from boys hockey, girls basketball, and boys basketball.

Boys Hockey Celebrates First Win

After a tough start to the season, the boys hockey team secured their first victory against the Bourne Canalmen, winning 5-1 at Gallo Arena. The team came out strong, scoring five unanswered goals after Bourne initially took the lead.

Head coach Jack Moran praised the team’s resilience, noting their hard work throughout the season, even after enduring 12 straight losses. Junior goalie Nick Yates had an outstanding game, making crucial saves that energized the team. “Nick stood on his head,” Moran said, emphasizing how his impressive performance lifted morale on the ice.

The Whalers exploded in the second period, scoring four goals. Junior captain Jeremy Jenkinson scored the first goal for Nantucket, and sophomore Jasper Soares quickly followed with two more. Junior assistant captain Canton Jenkinson rounded out the scoring for the period with a goal just before the end. The team’s final goal came from junior defenseman Soren Edwardes.

Moran reflected on the team’s spirit and determination, stating that his players have been committed regardless of the scoreboard. After a tough game against Barnstable, the team regrouped to focus on competing hard in their remaining matches. This strategy led to a competitive practice environment where players motivated each other to earn their spots on the roster.

The Whalers will look to continue their winning streak against the Monomoy Sharks on February 12th at 4 p.m.

Girls Basketball Dominates Sturgis West

The girls basketball team bounced back impressively, defeating the Sturgis West Navigators 59-13. This win followed a disappointing loss to Cape Cod Academy.

Senior captain Alana Ludvigson led the team with 17 points, while junior Marin Mooney added 13 and senior Maddie Lombardi contributed 12 points. Coach Jillian Fraker was pleased with the team’s revival, crediting their hard work in practice. “Our offense is back,” she said, highlighting Alana’s leadership during critical moments of the game.

With this victory, the team improves to 8-6, and their next game is set for February 13th against Rising Tide at 4:15 p.m.

Boys Basketball Falls to Falmouth

The boys basketball team faced a setback against Falmouth, losing 67-50. They struggled offensively in the first quarter, scoring only 11 points while Falmouth shot ahead with 22. Freshman Burke Lombardi managed to hit three three-pointers, but it wasn’t enough to close the gap.

Trailing 39-24 at halftime, the team had a tough third quarter, only managing to score six points. The boys will look to regain momentum when they host Monomoy on February 13th at 5 p.m.
