BIG RAPIDS — Athletes from Area 5 Special Olympics hopped on a Mecosta Osceola Transit Authority (MOTA) bus, excited to head to Central Michigan University for the Summer Olympics from May 28-30.
They were dropped off at Vogel Field in Big Rapids, where adult volunteers made sure everyone had what they needed for the journey. Parents also felt at ease knowing their athletes would be well cared for during the games.
Around 28 athletes were ready to compete in various events like the 50 and 100-meter dash, shot put, softball throw, and walking races.
MOTA stepped in to transport the athletes after the Area 5 Special Olympics sought help. Jacob Jackson from MOTA shared that the usual bus had broken down, leaving them in a tough spot. “They were exploring all options to get the athletes there, and MOTA was happy to help,” he said.
Even though this trip was outside their usual service area, MOTA coordinated with Isabella County to make it happen. Jackson mentioned that this was a first for them, showing their commitment to the community. They adjusted schedules to ensure they could pick the athletes up at CMU after the games.
This act of support illustrates how MOTA adapts in emergencies. Throughout the games, athletes will stay on campus, and MOTA will return to CMU on Saturday for their ride home.
It’s inspiring to see organizations coming together for a common cause. The Special Olympics encourages inclusion and celebrates the abilities of all athletes. In fact, recent surveys show that participation in such events often boosts not just physical skills but also confidence and social connections among athletes.
