The Colorado Avalanche made a notable move during the trade deadline. Nazem Kadri, a key player in their 2022 Stanley Cup win, is back with the team after being traded from the Calgary Flames. In exchange, the Avalanche sent a conditional 2028 first-round pick, a conditional 2027 second-round pick, top prospect Max Curran, and Victor Olofsson.
Kadri, who signed a seven-year, $49 million deal with Calgary in August 2022, had the Flames retaining 20% of his salary. Before trading for Kadri, the Avalanche also acquired center Nicolas Roy from the Toronto Maple Leafs. With Kadri back, Colorado boasts a strong center lineup that includes stars like Nathan MacKinnon and Brock Nelson, as well as depth players like Jack Drury and Ross Colton.
Notably, Kadri’s past performance with the Avs was impressive. He recorded 87 points during the 2021-22 season, plus contributed significantly in the playoffs by scoring seven goals and earning 15 points over 16 games. His return could bolster Colorado’s chances in upcoming games.
This trade follows a trend in the NHL where teams increasingly focus on strengthening their center positions. According to a recent NHL report, teams with solid center depth have a higher likelihood of making deep playoff runs. With Kadri back, the Avalanche now arguably has the strongest center corps in the league, enhancing their competitive edge.
As for the players sent to Calgary, Olofsson managed 11 goals and 25 points in 60 games. Curran, once considered a top prospect, adds to Calgary’s future potential.
