The Braves have traded catcher Jonah Heim to the Athletics for cash. This move came right after Atlanta activated Sean Murphy from the injured list. The A’s also announced Heim’s acquisition publicly, placing Shea Langeliers on the paternity list.
Heim returns to the Athletics, the team where he started his MLB journey six years ago. He was originally drafted by the Orioles, then traded to the Rays, and eventually landed with the A’s in exchange for infielder Joey Wendle. He made his MLB debut during the shortened 2020 season and was later traded to the Rangers, where he became part of the Elvis Andrus/Khris Davis deal.
His time with the Rangers marked a turning point. After a tough rookie season in 2021, Heim showed real promise in 2022, earning an All-Star spot and winning a Gold Glove. He played a key role in the Rangers’ World Series run while posting a solid batting average of .258.
However, his performance dipped over the past couple of years. Between 2024 and 2025, Heim posted a .217 batting average with a .269 on-base percentage. His strikeout rate remained steady, but his walk rate declined, and he lost a bit of his hard contact ability. As a result, Texas let him go last winter before he completed his arbitration years.
In Spring Training, Heim signed a $1.25 million deal with Atlanta, filling in while Murphy recovered from hip surgery. He played 12 games and had a batting line of .231/.311/.410, hitting one home run in 45 plate appearances. However, he struggled defensively, failing to catch any runners attempting to steal against him.
On the flip side, the A’s have their starting catcher in Langeliers, who should return soon. Backing him up is Austin Wynns, who has struggled so far this season. The A’s likely saw value in Heim, considering he and Wynns have significant MLB experience.
