As a result, doubts arose about Hughes’ future in Vancouver. General Manager Patrik Allvin mentioned, “A year ago, we sensed Quinn might want a change. We tried hard to convince him to stay, but when it became clear he wasn’t committed, we began exploring trade options.”
In the trade, the Canucks brought in some young talent from the Minnesota Wild. Among them are Marco Rossi and Zeev Buium. Rossi, a first-round pick in 2020, has tallied 114 points over 202 games for Minnesota. At just 24, he’s already showcased his skills with 13 points this season alone. He recently signed a three-year contract worth $15 million, set to become a restricted free agent in 2028.
Buium, only 20, made waves by winning a national championship while playing at the University of Denver. He has played in the NHL playoffs and scored 14 points in 31 games this season. Allvin remarked, “Zeev is a young, offensive-minded defenseman with playoff experience, and we’re excited to develop his abilities.”
Another player from Minnesota, 21-year-old Filip Ohgren, is looking to find his stride this season. Although he has seven points in 46 games, he has yet to score this season after a promising start. Ohgren was drafted in 2022 and signed a three-year entry-level contract shortly after.
Meanwhile, the Minnesota Wild, who are also undergoing some changes, hold a respectable third place in the Central Division with a record of 17-9-5. Since a rough start, they’ve bounced back remarkably with a 14-3-2 record in their last 19 games. This resilience highlights the ups and downs that can define a hockey season.
