Exciting Trade: Vikings Deal QB Sam Howell to Eagles as They Sign Carson Wentz!

The Vikings have made a surprising move by trading quarterback Sam Howell and a 2026 sixth-round pick to the Eagles. In return, they will receive a fifth- and seventh-round pick in 2026. Minnesota is also signing veteran Carson Wentz to step in as a backup for J.J. McCarthy.

Wentz, 32, recently visited the Vikings, and the meeting went well. McCarthy missed all of the 2024 season due to injury. Despite that, the Vikings believe he can lead the team in 2025. Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones left in free agency, and Howell was drafted with the hope he would back up McCarthy.

Howell had a solid first preseason game but struggled in his second, throwing only one pass for 13 yards and an interception. He did not play in the final preseason game, leaving Brett Rypien and rookie Max Brosmer to share quarterback duties.

Bringing in Wentz adds experience to the Vikings’ roster and gives them more draft picks to play with. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler noted that Minnesota might also be looking for a wide receiver. With trades like this, the Vikings could have the resources to make a significant addition. Reports indicate they are considering options, including bringing back former player Adam Thielen.

Howell’s career has taken a winding path already. Drafted by the Commanders in 2022, he started all 17 games in 2023 but struggled, finishing with a 4-13 record and leading the league with 21 interceptions. After being traded to Seattle in April 2024, his chances to play were limited.

Over in Philadelphia, the Eagles needed backup help since Jalen Hurts’ presumptive backup, Tanner McKee, is dealing with a finger injury. Howell is seen as a solid upgrade in case McKee isn’t ready for the season. There are talks the Eagles might even move McKee, given there’s outside interest in him.

In the midst of these changes, the Eagles have also waived injured DB Lewis Cine, who suffered an injury during a recent preseason game.
