Exciting Transformations Ahead: Southern University Unveils Ambitious New Projects!

BATON ROUGE, La. – Southern University is buzzing with new construction aimed at boosting the student experience.

Kenneth Dawson, the Assistant Director of Facility Planning, shared that the new classroom designs aren’t just about lectures; they focus on creating a welcoming space. “We want students to feel comfortable and collaborative,” he said, “a place where they enjoy spending time.”

The campus is seeing the rise of a new police department, a STEM building, a business school, an amphitheater, and a welcome center. Dawson believes these additions will attract more students. “When potential students visit, they see all the activity and excitement. That can inspire them to join us,” he explained.

The total cost for these projects is around $200 million, which Dawson sees as a vital investment in education. Alongside new structures, about $20 million will go toward upgrades in older buildings, including roofs and HVAC systems.

These improvements aim to honor the school’s rich history. Dawson noted, “We want to include artwork and photos that reflect our heritage in these new spaces.”

Students can expect to enjoy the welcome center and amphitheater by year’s end, while major projects like the STEM and business buildings are set to wrap up by 2027.
