Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has officially taken the reins of the Ministry of Health from his predecessor, Deborah Barasa. The ceremony took place at the Ministry’s headquarters in Nairobi on April 1, 2025.

The event was attended by key figures, including Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni, who oversees Public Health and Professional Standards, and Harry Kimtai, who managed Medical Services.
Duale’s appointment on March 26 came as part of a Cabinet reshuffle in which Barasa transitioned to the Ministry of Environment. Prior to his new role, Duale served as the Cabinet Secretary for Defence, a position he held from October 31, 2022, until his removal in July 2024. He returned to the cabinet shortly after in an environmental capacity.
One of Duale’s main priorities is to combat corruption within “Afya House,” the informal name for the Ministry of Health. He has expressed a strong commitment to tackle the cartels that have influenced the ministry’s operations. “Those with personal interests have no space at Afya House,” he stated, emphasizing his determination to face these challenges directly. Duale mentioned that he has the backing of the President in his efforts.
Corruption in healthcare is an ongoing issue in many countries. According to the World Health Organization, corruption can reduce the quality of healthcare services, increase costs, and hinder access to essential treatments. This underscores the importance of Duale’s mission to restore integrity within the department.
Social media reactions to Duale’s appointment have been mixed. Some citizens took to platforms like Twitter to express hope that he will bring positive changes, while others remain skeptical, pointing to past issues in the health sector. Surveys show that trust in government institutions, especially in health, has waned in recent years, highlighting the critical role Duale plays in restoring public confidence.
With a renewed focus on transparency and integrity, the Ministry of Health looks to overcome its challenges. As Duale embarks on this journey, many will be watching closely, hopeful for a healthier future for all.
