The Jacksonville University Board of Trustees has appointed Dr. Lisa Sutherland as Interim President, starting July 1, 2026. With over two decades of experience in both higher education and the corporate world, she brings a wealth of knowledge to the role.
Board Chair John Miller expressed confidence in her abilities, saying, “Dr. Sutherland’s unique mix of academic and executive skills will provide the steady leadership Jacksonville University needs during this transition.”
Before her current position, Sutherland taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Dartmouth College. Her academic roles included everything from teaching and advising students to leading research projects. She also managed a substantial research portfolio funded by the National Institutes of Health.
Sutherland isn’t just an academic. She founded Sutherland Group, LLC, a global consulting firm that advised major brands like Walmart and Kraft-Heinz. Notably, she worked as the chief nutrition advisor for Walmart, leading initiatives that encouraged healthier food options during First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” campaign.
“I am honored by the trust the Board has placed in me,” Dr. Sutherland said. “Jacksonville University is special, with a strong community committed to shaping the future. Together, we will strengthen our foundation and ensure every student receives an impactful education.”
Since joining Jacksonville University in 2023, Sutherland has already made significant changes. She revitalized the honors program, co-chaired the University’s strategic planning for 2030, and represented JU in various external roles. Currently, she serves as the Executive Director of the Cost Honors College and has been the Interim Dean of the Davis College of Business and Technology since July 2025.
“Dr. Sutherland is an agile leader with a strong track record here,” said President Tim Cost. “Her insight and commitment to student success make her well-suited for this important transition.”
Dr. Sutherland earned her PhD at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, also completing a postdoctoral fellowship there. The Board of Trustees plans to conduct a national search for a permanent president in spring 2026. More details will follow as the process develops.
Leadership transitions in universities can impact student morale and long-term planning. According to a recent report by the American Council on Education, effective leadership is crucial for fostering a positive academic environment. As universities navigate challenges like enrollment declines and funding issues, strong leaders like Dr. Sutherland can make a significant difference.
User reactions on social media highlight optimism about Sutherland’s appointment. Many alumni and students have shared their hopes for a productive era under her interim leadership, building on the community spirit already present at Jacksonville University.
In summary, Dr. Lisa Sutherland’s diverse background and commitment to education position her well to lead Jacksonville University into its next chapter.
