Exciting Update: Board of Education Meetings Now Happening on Monday Evenings!

Grosse Pointe Farms recently made a change regarding the schedule for Board of Education meetings. Originally, meetings moved to Tuesday to avoid overlapping with city council meetings. However, the Board has now decided to shift back to Monday nights. This change aims to prevent any conflicts with school activities.

During a January 7 meeting at Brownell Middle School, the Board approved its meeting schedule for 2025, voting 5-2 in favor. Board President Colleen Worden advocated for the return to Mondays. She highlighted that Tuesdays are often busy for the district, and having meetings on Mondays is better for students and families.

However, the decision wasn’t without debate. Four out of five city councils in the Grosse Pointes have their meetings on Mondays, which could affect public attendance. Board member Ginny Jeup expressed concern that residents might miss important discussions if they overlap with city council meetings. Fellow board member Sean Cotton echoed her thoughts, noting that many community members enjoy being able to attend both meetings.

Another point of discussion was the meeting times. Worden proposed moving the starting time to 7 p.m., believing it would accommodate working parents better. On the other side, Jeup argued that their peer districts typically hold meetings earlier at 6 p.m., allowing parents to get their kids to bed on time. Worden hopes that future meetings will not run as late, making it easier for families to participate.

It’s important to note that not all meetings in 2025 will be on Mondays. A few will still occur on Tuesdays due to scheduling conflicts or public holidays.
