Europe’s journey to Mars is gearing up with some exciting news. The European Space Agency (ESA) recently announced that Airbus will create the landing platform for its Mars rover, Rosalind Franklin. This mission is set to launch in 2028, with hopes of uncovering signs of life on the Red Planet.

Rosalind Franklin is part of the larger ExoMars project, which has faced significant changes. Originally, this project was a collaboration between ESA and Russia. However, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, ESA restructured the mission. This meant finding new solutions for both the launch vehicle and the lander, previously reliant on Russian technology.

Now, Airbus will design the landing equipment, which is crucial for delivering Rosalind Franklin safely to Mars. As Kata Escott, managing director at Airbus Defense and Space in the U.K., stated, “This mission is a big step for space exploration and showcases our growing capabilities.” The mission aims to enhance our understanding of the solar system and push forward scientific knowledge.

The contract with Airbus is valued at around 150 million pounds (approximately 194 million US dollars). This investment not only supports space exploration but also boosts technological advancements in the U.K.

Rosalind Franklin holds the title of Europe’s first rover on Mars. This wheeled explorer will look for signs of life using a range of sophisticated instruments, including a drill that can dig as deep as 6.5 feet (2 meters) below the surface. The rover’s target, Oxia Planum, is a location believed to have once hosted water, which is critical for the search for life.

With NASA also involved, Rosalind Franklin will be launched from the United States. If everything goes to plan, we could see the rover landing in 2030. This mission is not just a technical challenge; it’s a chance to expand our scientific horizons and learn more about our neighboring planet.
