LEE COUNTY — During the recent Lee County Commission meeting, Anne Whittelsey provided an update on the Community Food Market. Whittelsey, part of the Capital Campaigns Committee, noted that the campaign began a few months ago and aims to complete construction by September. She shared exciting news: the cities of Opelika and Auburn have each contributed significant funds, and thanks to Senator Jay Hovey, the state of Alabama is contributing $700,000. “We are so grateful to the state for recognizing the importance of this market,” she said.
The need for this project is clear. Food insecurity in Lee County has risen by 19% in just two years, according to the Food Bank Network. Whittelsey warned that further cuts to SNAP benefits could worsen this situation. The campaign’s goal is set at $3.9 million. “Some said we wouldn’t achieve it, but I know we will, thanks to the generous people of Lee County,” she stated.
While no decisions were made at the meeting, District 5 Commissioner Richard LaGrand expressed support for the community market. Construction is on track to finish in September, but no opening date has been announced yet.
