Big news is coming for health care education in our area! A new state-of-the-art facility is on the way for students at Cal Poly Humboldt and College of the Redwoods. Funding of $10 million was announced by State Senator Mike McGuire in 2022, but the project has faced some changes since then.

Initially, the hub was planned for a large warehouse on Samoa Boulevard, just southeast of Arcata’s downtown. However, due to rising construction costs, the location is changing. The new site will be the Stewart Building, located at 1125 16th Street. This building is a century old and was originally a school. Renovating it is expected to be more cost-effective compared to the previous location.

The Stewart Building sits across from Arcata High School, making it closer to the main campus and local amenities. This new spot offers great chances for teaming up with high school programs too.

Once completed, the educational hub will train future health care workers, including nurses, EMTs, and radiology technicians. In his announcement, McGuire called it “the most modern health care learning lab between the Golden Gate Bridge and the Oregon border.”

Cal Poly Humboldt is committed to this project. They are working closely with local healthcare providers and architects from Smithgroup to design the facility. Melissa Hutsell from the university shared that the team is continually building partnerships and exploring modern practices in health care.

We reached out for more details about the timeline for construction and when it will be finished, but haven’t received a response yet. We’ll provide updates as we learn more.
