Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee announced today that she received word from Alameda County Sheriff Yesenia Sanchez that Border Patrol operations are currently on hold in the greater Bay Area, which includes Oakland.
Sgt. Roberto Morales from the Sheriff’s Office confirmed this news. It appears that the federal government’s planned surge operation, initially set to target areas like San Francisco, will not proceed as scheduled.
In previous reports, there was mention of a caravan of Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents arriving at Coast Guard Island in Oakland. This raised concerns among local residents as the CBP was expected to begin an operation starting Saturday. However, the specifics of these planned actions remained unclear.
On Thursday, as uncertainty grew, protestors gathered near Coast Guard Island to voice their opposition to any immigration crackdown. Later that day, President Donald Trump announced on social media that the federal surge in San Francisco would be paused, leaving residents of Oakland and other nearby communities hopeful that they would also be spared from this operation.
As it stands, the Trump administration and the Department of Homeland Security have not publicly clarified their intentions for Oakland and surrounding East Bay cities.
