Traffic Update: New Roundabout Near University of Nebraska at Kearney
Starting Thursday, traffic on U.S. Highway 30 near the University of Nebraska at Kearney will flow more smoothly. The second phase of a new roundabout project, which began in March, is now complete.
During the next phase of construction, some access points will change. The main entrance to University Village, known as University Drive South, will be closed. Traffic will need to use Chancellors Avenue, located near the Fred & Pamela Buffett Cancer Center. This change will stay in effect until mid-October.
The project, costing $3.48 million, aims to improve safety for pedestrians and better accommodate vehicles, including larger trucks. Landscaping and finishing touches should be finished by mid-November.
University Village is a unique mix of education, living spaces, and shops, designed to promote walking and a community feel. The development covers 104 acres and is a collaboration between the university, the Nebraska Department of Transportation, and the City of Kearney. Funding includes $1.57 million from UNK, $1.53 million from the state, and $380,000 from the city.
Interestingly, roundabouts have become popular in the U.S. as a way to enhance road safety. According to a 2021 study published by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, roundabouts can reduce the number of accidents by up to 40%. They also tend to improve traffic flow by allowing continuous movement, reducing congestion.
