The Indian Railways is making big changes to Tatkal ticket booking starting July 1, 2025. The goal? To make booking easier for everyone while keeping things fair and transparent. This change comes as a response to the growing concerns about misuse by booking agents and third-party vendors.

From July 1, you’ll need to verify your identity using an Aadhaar-based One-Time Password (OTP) for Tatkal bookings. This verification will be required for online bookings, counter reservations, and even bookings through agents. The railways claim this will double your chances of getting a confirmed ticket.

On July 15, an extra layer of security kicks in. To complete your booking, you must enter the OTP sent to your mobile linked to your Aadhaar. This rule applies to all classes, ensuring that only genuine passengers can use the Tatkal service.

Additionally, agents will face restrictions: they won’t be allowed to book Tatkal tickets in the first 30 minutes when booking opens—10:00 am for AC coaches and 11:00 am for non-AC. This gives Aadhaar-verified travelers a better chance to grab last-minute seats in emergencies.

Another significant change is for waiting list passengers. Traditionally, travelers wouldn’t know if their tickets were confirmed until just a few hours before departure. But now, you’ll find out 24 hours before your journey whether you have a confirmed seat, which can help reduce last-minute travel stress.

Interestingly, according to a recent survey by the Indian Railways, nearly 70% of train passengers feel that transparent ticketing processes would improve trust in the system. Experts in the travel industry emphasize that these changes could lead to more efficient travel experiences, which is essential as passenger numbers continue to rise.
