The Mets are buzzing with excitement about pitching prospect Jonah Tong. According to Mike Puma from the New York Post, there’s a chance Tong could debut in the MLB before the end of the 2025 season. He recently made his Triple-A debut with Syracuse and has already made a big impression.
At just 22, Tong has quickly climbed the ranks since being picked in the seventh round of the 2022 draft. He’s now considered one of the top prospects in baseball. Baseball America ranks him at 42nd, while MLB Pipeline has him at 44th. His stats speak for themselves: he boasts a remarkable 1.43 ERA and an impressive 40.5% strikeout rate over more than 113 innings this season across Double-A and Triple-A levels.
However, every opportunity comes with risks. Tong has a walk rate of 10.6%, which could be a target for experienced hitters. Yet, his delivery style can confuse them, along with his fastball that maintains good break despite its modest velocity (91-94 mph).
The Mets are currently in a particularly grueling part of their season, facing 26 games in just 27 days. This schedule adds pressure to a rotation that hasn’t been performing well lately. Tong’s promotion could be strategic, allowing him to start in a challenging match-up, similar to how they recently called up rookie Nolan McLean to replace Frankie Montas.
Given the pressing need for fresh arms, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Tong and another top prospect, Brandon Sproat, take the mound this season. The Mets didn’t make major moves at the trade deadline, particularly in their pursuit of Twins pitcher Jhoan Duran. Reports suggested they were unwilling to part with top prospects like McLean, Tong, or Sproat, which might have hindered their ability to negotiate effectively.
The Twins ended up trading Duran to the Phillies. He’s had a strong start there, while the Mets’ new bullpen additions have shown mixed results. This situation has contributed to a disappointing 7-13 record in August, putting them six games behind the Phillies in the NL East.
In additional Mets news, manager Carlos Mendoza announced that outfielder Jose Siri is set to begin a minor league rehab assignment following a long recovery from a fractured left tibia. After missing significant time, Siri may return just in time for roster expansions on September 1. His return could shift the team dynamics, especially since the Mets acquired Cedric Mullins, adding more competition for playing time in the outfield.
As the season rolls on, the Mets must navigate these challenges while banking on their promising young talent to help turn things around.
