Monument Health’s Spearfish Hospital has recently been recognized as one of the Top 100 Rural & Community Hospitals for 2025, according to the Chartis Center for Rural Health. This accolade comes as the hospital embarks on an important expansion project.
Hospital President Thomas Worsley shared that they are making good headway on the first phase of the expansion, which should be completed by winter 2026. This phase will introduce private medical-surgical rooms and a new entrance, both of which are essential for better serving the surrounding rural communities.
Worsley emphasized the hospital’s commitment to these communities, stating, "We know that they find us from further and further distances, so we want to make that easier for them." The goal is to simplify access to healthcare services.
While Worsley acknowledged that traffic around the hospital might be challenging during construction, he assured that things would improve with the completion of phase one. This initial stage will include some public access areas, although full access and additional parking solutions will take longer to realize as further phases progress.
He expressed gratitude towards the community for their patience. The expansion aims to enhance healthcare access, which is crucial for those living in rural areas. According to the National Rural Health Association, rural communities often face significant healthcare access challenges, and improvements like these can lead to better health outcomes.
