Exciting Updates on the Indian-Bhutan Rail Line: Indian Railways Finalizes Key Locational Survey!

Guwahati: A new railway line connecting Gelephu in Bhutan to Kokrajhar in Assam is about to change the way these two regions interact. This project aims to boost cross-border connectivity and strengthen the relationship between Bhutan and Assam.

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), which manages rail transport in India’s northeastern region, has been making strides on this project. They have completed the final location survey to establish the new rail link.

Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced this significant initiative during the recent Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit in Guwahati. He highlighted that the Indian Railways is focusing on several new projects to improve connectivity with neighboring countries.

NFR explained that the proposed railway line spans 69.04 kilometers, linking Kokrajhar station in Assam to Gelephu in Bhutan, with an estimated cost of Rs. 3,500 crores. This project will include the construction of six new stations: Balajan, Garubhasa, Runikhata, Shantipur, Dadgiri, and Gelephu. It also features extensive infrastructure, including two major bridges, 29 additional bridges, 65 minor bridges, one road over bridge, 39 road under bridges, and two viaducts.

With the successful completion of the Final Location Survey (FLS) and the submission of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for approval, the railway line is on track to enhance trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges between India and Bhutan. This will provide Bhutan its first railway link, making transportation much easier for goods and people.

Moreover, this railway connection will elevate Bodoland as an emerging trade and transit hub, helping local businesses thrive. Overall, the Assam-Bhutan railway line promises to improve economic opportunities and connectivity, paving the way for future growth and development in the region.
