Indian Railways is making big changes to many railway stations across the country through the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS). This effort aims to improve the experience for travelers and make stations more accessible. One such station undergoing redevelopment is Shamli Railway Station in Uttar Pradesh, which is in its final stages of modernization.
Shamli station sees around 6,500 passengers daily, primarily commuters. The upgrade is budgeted at approximately ₹25 crore. Once the work is complete, passengers can look forward to modern amenities and better overall comfort.
The focus for this redevelopment is on passenger comfort and accessibility. Features will include improved entry and exit points, upgraded waiting areas (both AC and non-AC), clean restrooms, and facilities for the differently-abled. There will also be two lifts and spacious waiting areas to make the travel experience smoother.
According to the Northern Railway, progress is impressive. The main building is almost finished, with minor finishing touches left. A new wide foot overbridge (FOB) is nearly complete, and most platform work is done. Approximately 70% of the platform surfacing is finished, with just a few areas left to address.
The differently-abled facilities have been fully installed, including tactile paths, low-height ticket counters, and ramps. Work on circulation and parking areas is also close to completion.
As transportation needs change, projects like this highlight the importance of modernizing infrastructure. Historical data suggests that improved facilities not only enhance passenger satisfaction but can also lead to increased ridership. For instance, a study by the Deloitte indicates that passenger satisfaction can go up by 30-40% with better amenities.
