Exciting Updates: WHL Unveils New Rules and Regulations for the 2025 Expansion Draft!

The excitement is building as Penticton prepares to welcome its first Western Hockey League (WHL) team, the Penticton Vees. The expansion draft, scheduled for May 7, will be a key moment for the new franchise. This event allows the Vees to select one player from each of the 22 existing WHL teams, setting them up for their inaugural season.

It’s worth noting that players who are 16 years old (born in 2009) are exempt from this draft, meaning they won’t be available for selection. On May 6, teams will announce their protected players, which adds another layer of strategy to the process.

Each team has two options for player protection:

1. Protect 16 players aged 17 to 20 (born between 2005 and 2008), which can include players on their 50-player list, those injured, suspended, or special imports, plus six college players.

2. Protect 14 players aged 17 to 19 and three 20-year-olds, along with six college players.

Currently, two underage players in the NHL, Connor Bedard and Zach Benson, are also exempt from the draft.

Another interesting rule is that as a new team, the Vees can dress up to four 20-year-olds in all games during the 2025-26 season. This will help them bring experience and stability to the team during their formative year.

The Vees will play at the 5,000-seat South Okanagan Events Centre, providing a local venue for fans to rally behind their new team. In their division, they will compete with other clubs from British Columbia, including Victoria, Prince George, Vancouver, Kamloops, and Kelowna. Additionally, they’ll face teams from Alberta, Washington, and Oregon, creating a diverse competitive landscape.
