Women’s World Match Racing Tour Unveils 2025 Season
The Women’s World Match Racing Tour has released its schedule for 2025. The tour will feature six exciting events in four countries: the USA, France, Sweden, and Bermuda.
Now in its fourth season, this tour is the only global series focused solely on women in sailing. It aims to increase women’s participation in the sport through match racing competitions. The tour is managed by the World Match Racing Tour organization, which has been hosting this event since 2006.
This year, over 150 female sailors are expected to participate. Newcomers are joining the ranks as opportunities expand for women looking to compete at a professional level. James Pleasance, the Tour Executive Director, emphasizes that offering events for women is essential for growth. The success of the Women’s America’s Cup last summer in Barcelona also played a significant role in encouraging new participants.
The 2025 tour kicks off in the USA with back-to-back events. The Casa Vela Cup will take place from May 28 to 31, hosted by the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco. Races will occur right in front of the club, with the stunning Golden Gate Bridge in view.
Next up is the Santa Maria Cup in Annapolis, scheduled for June 4 to 7 at the Eastport Yacht Club on Chesapeake Bay. Both events will use club-supplied J22 yachts, making it accessible for participants.
Following these events, the tour moves to Le Havre, France, for the Normandy Match Cup from June 6 to 9. This year, the Santa Maria Cup and the Normandy Match Cup will overlap; however, the top three scores from six events will count towards the final standings, allowing more teams to engage.
In July, the tour returns to Sweden for the Nordea Women’s Trophy from July 1 to 6. This event will run alongside the popular Match Cup Sweden, hosted by the Royal Gothenburg Yacht Club. Notably, the WINGS Team from Sweden, led by Anna Östling, will compete to defend their title.
The fifth stage of the tour will take place in Chicago from September 17 to 20, as the Chicago Yacht Club hosts the Women’s Match Racing World Championship. Competitors will sail in the club’s fleet of Tom 28 yachts, which were previously part of the Chicago Match Race Center.
The season wraps up in Bermuda with the Bermuda Women’s Match Race, running from October 21 to 26. This event will be held at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club during the 73rd Bermuda Gold Cup. Eight women’s teams and eight open teams will participate. Last year, France’s Match in Pink team, skippered by Pauline Courtois, took home the title.
