The University of Connecticut is kicking off an exciting renovation at Gampel Pavilion, the heartbeat of UConn basketball. Starting now, this significant upgrade, which is expected to wrap up by November 2026, aims to enhance both the player and fan experience.
David Benedict, the Director of Athletics, emphasized the importance of a top-notch facility: “Gampel Pavilion has one of the most electric atmospheres in college basketball. Our athletes and fans deserve a venue that reflects our standards.” UConn is known as the Basketball Capital of the World, and this renovation promises to keep that spirit alive.
This multi-phase project is backed by $99.4 million from non-tax revenue generated through “UConn 2000” bonds. This funding illustrates a strong commitment to enhancing the rich traditions of UConn’s vibrant basketball programs.
In the first phase, expect major changes, including:
– A complete roof replacement
– A new Basketball Gameday Suite with a recruiting lounge, modern locker rooms, and upgraded officials’ facilities
– Fresh grab-and-go food options at each corner, relieving congestion in the stands
With these changes, fans will enjoy a smoother game-day experience.
Looking ahead, Phase 2 is set to start in March 2027. This will introduce premium spaces and areas focused on generating additional revenue, further supporting the student-athlete experience through improvements in nutrition and training.
UConn is partnering with various experts, including DPR Construction for project management and S/L/A/M Collaborative for design. Their collaborative effort ensures that the renovations meet modern needs while honoring the facility’s legacy.
With the renovation underway, fans and players alike can look forward to a revitalized Gampel Pavilion, designed to match the intensity of UConn basketball.
