The Georgia Bulldogs softball team had a thrilling home opener, beating Michigan 3-2. With this win, the Bulldogs improved their record to 6-0 for the season.
Head coach Tony Baldwin praised his team’s spirit, saying, “I just love the competitive nature of this group. We made some great plays and had key hits when we needed them. The results may not always be perfect, but if we keep competing, we’ll see the outcomes improve.”
Lilli Backes pitched for four innings, recording three strikeouts and allowing just one run. This marked her third win of the season. Randi Roelling stepped in to close the game and earned her first save.
The Bulldogs took an early lead when freshmen Esther White and Paislie Allen both drove in runs in the second inning, pushing the score to 2-0. Later, Lyndi Rae Davis hit a spectacular solo home run in the third inning, making the score 3-0.
Michigan responded in the fourth inning with three hits, managing to score one run but leaving three runners stranded. They continued to fight back, closing the gap to 3-2 in the sixth inning. Georgia’s defense held strong to secure the win, despite the Bulldogs not scoring again after Davis’s home run.
Baldwin reflected on the game: “We had some solid at bats. It’s easy to judge by the scoreboard, but you can still perform well even if the results don’t show it. We did a lot of good things that might not show in the box score, and we just need to keep improving.”
Next up, the Bulldogs will face Michigan State at 6 p.m. on Friday as part of the 18th Annual Red & Black Showcase at Jack Turner Stadium.
