GAME NOTES: SAMFORD AT TENNESSEE
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – This weekend, the Samford baseball team is heading to Knoxville, Tennessee, to face the fourth-ranked Volunteers. The teams will play three games: Friday at 1 p.m. (CT), Saturday at 1 p.m. (CT), and Sunday at 12 p.m. (CT).
This matchup is exciting as it marks the first time Samford and Tennessee will compete against each other in baseball.
Samford comes into this series with a record of 3-1. They started strong by sweeping Valparaiso but suffered a loss against Jacksonville State, falling 12-6 on Tuesday.
For the Bulldogs, starting pitchers will be left-hander Miller Riggins on Friday, right-hander Cameron Keshock on Saturday, and another right-hander, Josh Leerssen, in the final game.
At the plate, Samford’s Cade Carr leads the team with a .429 batting average, including a home run and 10 RBIs. Michael Gupton also matches Carr’s average, contributing two doubles and a triple with six runs scored. Freshman Gus Gandy has shown promise with five hits and four runs batted in, while fellow freshman Jake Souders follows closely with six RBIs.
Tennessee, on the other hand, is off to a strong start with a 4-0 record. The Volunteers kicked off their season with a sweep of Hofstra and followed that with an impressive 29-4 win against UNC Asheville.
Levi Clark leads Tennessee’s offense with eight RBIs, while Dean Curley is powering the lineup with three home runs. Dalton Bargo has also hit two homers this season.
The Volunteers will send lefty Liam Doyle to the mound for the first game, with right-hander Marcus Phillips following on Saturday. The starting pitcher for Sunday has yet to be announced.
