Connellsville senior Evan Petrovich grapples with Beau Lewis from Great Bridge (Va.) during a 152-pound consolation match at Powerade on Dec. 28, 2024.

The February Frenzy kicks off with exciting WPIAL championship wrestling and boys’ and girls’ basketball games.

This Saturday at Peters Township, teams will compete in the district team wrestling semifinals and championships. The Class 2A semifinals feature a showdown between the defending champion Burrell and fourth-seeded Quaker Valley at 10 a.m. This match is significant as it mirrors the thrilling 2022 WPIAL 2A championship, where Quaker Valley stunned Burrell 30-28, breaking a remarkable streak of 15 consecutive titles for Burrell from 2007 to 2021. The Bucs defeated Quaker Valley with a decisive score of 44-17 in last year’s semifinals before capturing their 18th title against Burgettstown.

In the other semifinal, McGuffey will face Derry. McGuffey has a rich wrestling history with four WPIAL titles, while Derry is still in search of its first championship.

In Class 3A, Connellsville, the top seed looking to defend its title, will take on Norwin, which is striving for its first WPIAL championship. In another semifinal, Franklin Regional will battle Thomas Jefferson. Franklin Regional won back-to-back titles in 2014 and 2015, while Jefferson hopes to break into the win column with its first championship.

The championship and consolation finals for both classes will also be held at Peters Township later in the day.

Section Basketball Games

This Saturday, several key boys’ and girls’ basketball games will take place as section play wraps up. In Section 1-2A boys’ basketball, Greensburg Central Catholic, with a strong record of 17-2, will host Clairton at noon. The Centurions are on track to secure the section title, holding a perfect 11-0 section record.

Clairton, currently in third place at 7-4, has already secured a playoff spot, despite some recent struggles. Fans can also catch three girls’ section games:

  • Bethel Park hosts Albert Gallatin in Section 4-5A at noon.
  • In Section 2-4A, Hampton faces Ambridge with both teams aiming for a playoff berth.
  • Section 3-3A features Seton LaSalle against Charleroi, with Seton leading the section.
