Police in Santa Fe, New Mexico, recently released body-camera footage related to the tragic deaths of actor Gene Hackman and his wife, Betsy Arakawa. The footage, though partially redacted, sheds light on the couple’s final moments in their home last month.
Officers responding to the scene noted concerns about carbon monoxide poisoning, which was initially suspected. However, witnesses claimed something felt “weird” about the situation, suggesting a different cause. A dog was also found deceased in the house, raising further questions.
Jesse Kesler, the couple’s contractor, expressed worry after not hearing from them for weeks. He conducted a wellness check that led to the discovery of Betsy’s body on February 26. Kesler encountered the couple’s security guard during his visit, leading to the grim find.
Following these events, Hackman’s estate filed a legal petition to prevent the release of any internal footage or photos from their home. They argued that the couple had taken measures to protect their privacy during their lives and deserved the same respect posthumously.
Both Hackman, 95, and Arakawa, 65, were confirmed to have died of natural causes, although their deaths occurred a week apart from different health issues. Arakawa succumbed to Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, a rare disease that can result from contact with infected rodents. Hackman’s passing was linked to cardiovascular problems and advanced Alzheimer’s disease.
Interestingly, recent studies indicate that deaths from rare diseases like Hantavirus have increased, highlighting the need for awareness around such threats. The medical examination revealed no signs of trauma for either individual.
It remains uncertain whether Hackman was aware of his wife’s passing. His Alzheimer’s disease might have impaired his understanding of the situation. Betsy was last seen alive around February 11, while Hackman likely passed away by February 18.
Investigators have ruled out carbon monoxide poisoning and other respiratory infections during their probe, emphasizing that the investigation is still open to finalize remaining details.
